Time Out Says

“An ounce of practice is worth more than tons of preaching”, our receipt tells us. The famous Mahatma Gandhi quote is fitting for a spot that has stood firm against the overpopulation of Indian restaurants on its patch, quietly continuing to go about the same business of serving predominantly vegetarian cuisine from the Rajasthan region of north-west India. In fact, when it did try to shout – undergoing a makeover a couple of years ago – a little of the magic was lost. Yet it remains a cult classic, an outpost hidden away in the maze of streets and markets; a real Karama experience before you’ve even entered. On the menu, garlic and onion are considered a “lazy” means of adding flavour, so expect to discover something a little different. Dahl bati churma, a DIY dish involving the breaking up and drowning in piping hot dahl of fresh batis, sprinkled with semi-sweet churma. Devine. Also, a nod to the papad churi, a fiery, crunchy accompaniment for your juicier mains. Overall, this is top notch meal for two for half the price of a main at some of the more celebrated Indian restaurants. It stays true to its roots and is as authentic as they come.
