Time Out Says

A ‘merlion’, in case you’re curious, is a mythological beast, a fish-lion hybrid in fact, and in city-state Singapore, it has become a national symbol. Located in JLT, Merlion’s King is one of the only concepts in the emirate to focus on the exciting, natural fusion of the three cuisines (Malay, Chinese, Indian) that Singapore’s food reflects. Merlion’s King is a humble space, decorated with a few Chinese red lanterns and photographs of Singapore, while behind the reservation counter, you can see into the kitchen and its flaming woks. A neat two-page menu offers a varied choice, with plenty of recognisable Singaporean items such as chilli crab and noodle dish char kway teo. From that selection, the dishes tend to have all the delicious and warming qualities of simple, homely and freshly prepared food. Service at Merlion’s King is fairly friendly and helpful, and the staff certainly know the menu. As an affordable and accessible Singaporean food experience, this is a very satisfying option indeed.
