Time Out Says

There’s a wealth of world-class Japanese eateries in Dubai, however, it’s definitely worth venturing off the “who’s who” list once in a while.

Miyako might not be a name on everyone’s lips, but it should be, if it’s traditional cuisine you’re after.

Having opened in 1987, it is the city’s oldest Japanese eatery – located at the Hyatt Regency Dubai on Al Khaleej Road in Deira – but it doesn’t feel dated, either in terms of the menu or décor.

The stark space has a fresh feel, housing a sushi bar, teppanyaki table and a traditional tatami room.

A glance at our fellow diners, who are mostly Japanese, speaks highly of the cuisine, much of which you’re unlikely to see in mainstream locations. This in mind, we opt to try some more unusual dishes (but with a portion of salmon avocado maki, just to be on the safe side). We needn’t have been so cautious.

Magoro yamakake (cubes of tuna in sweet potato paste) has an unique texture, but excellent taste. However, it’s the authentic seafood hotpot that’s the meal’s highlight. A cauldron of fresh fish, prawns, scallops and more bubbles away invitingly before the contents are ready to be served.

It’s simple, authentic and done well. Which rather sums up Miyako, too.

The bottom line
Dishes worth making the journey for.
