Time Out Says

As we sit in Mori Sushi waiting to order, we wonder where it will fit into the Dubai sushi scene. Casual and at the lower end of the price spectrum, it’s an unlicensed venue with views of the Burj Khalifa.

It’s hard to tell from the menu what the restaurant is going to be like. There are hundreds of options available, from the familiar (tuna nigiri, California maki rolls) to the more unorthodox (lasagne roll, anyone?).

With staff busy swatting flies that are buzzing around the venue, we struggle to take it all in. It’s especially tough to choose given there’s a lack of information on what any sharing platters might include.

We order edamame (we always do), which has a whiff of microwave about them. Plump steamed chicken gyozas are much better, especially when dipped in the slightly sweet soy, yuzu sauce they come with (we can’t detect any spice, but the menu says it’s there).

The seared tuna platter is the most expensive thing we order, but is also disappointing. Again, the promised spicy sauce doesn’t really taste of much, nor does the tuna, which is more semi-cooked than seared.

Sashimi seems to be of good quality, but is served way too cold for us. The Hot Bangkok roll is better. It has a deep-fried tempura coating that encases shrimp, asparagus and cream cheese, with a lemon mayo dressing that lifts the flavours. But our pick of the meal is the Mango Rainbow Roll, the fruit complementing the rich eel perfectly.

If you’re after sushi with a twist, this might be for you, but purists should look away.

The Bottom Line
Plenty to try, but on this evidence, not all of it hits the mark.
