Time Out Says
And whether you know this from the movies or by visiting, what you do need to do is check out the latter of that list at new New York-style pizza joint Motorino.
In the space that was Girders, interiors are edgy and cool, with graffiti-style art on the walls and an open kitchen with a huge pizza oven taking centre stage.
The new restaurant also spills out on the terrace outside, which has had a makeover to become a pretty al fresco area (albeit interrupted slightly by the blasting horns of JBR and patrons of the sports bar upstairs, Offside, trudging through).
However, although the place is low-key, the chef behind it is suitably well-known. Michelin-starred French-trained chef Mathieu Palombino of Motorino New York provides the menu, after the team at JA Hotels & Resorts decided it was “the best pizza they’ve ever tasted globally”. Bold claim.
The famed pizzas, which are featured in the Bib Gourmand Michelin Guide, are made with dough that has a traditional two-day rising process to make a bubbly yet crispy crust.
There’s a list of white and red pizzas with a variety of toppings.
We opt for the soppressata piccante (beef pepperoni) as recommended by our friendly server, who tells us it’s a global bestseller. And we can see why.
The pillowy crust is perfectly blistered, while a thin base is slathered in tangy tomato sauce. Lashings of pepperoni, fior di latte, Parmesan and pecorino round it off. It’s filling, delicious and moreish.
If you’re not a pizza fan (although we think these might convince you) there’s pasta – of which the linguine alle vongole is tasty, with al dente noodles and a generous helping of clams.
Another highlight on the menu is octopus and potatoes to start, which is meaty, tender and flavoursome.
Service is slick – staff really know the menu, so stick to their recommendations and you’ll be happy.
For excellent pizza at a decent price, bee-line to Motorino.
