Nezesaussi, Manzil Downtown

Lively sports bar, but the food menu is lacking in South African, Australian and New Zealand specialities

Time Out Says

One of Dubai’s greatest characteristics is its truly melting pot of, well, cooking pots thanks to the mighty expat population. It means exceptional cuisine from countless countries and the regions within them: south India, north Vietnam, north west Malaysia, south Italy and so on. However, three counties that are often underrepresented despite the huge numbers of nationals living in the city are South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. While supermarkets such as Carrefour and Spinneys are often adorned with marauding homesick South Hemisphere cooks willfully filling up baskets with meats from their homelands, the same can’t really be said for restaurants.

That’s where Nezesaussi in the Manzil Downtown comes in.

The large sports bar attracts a large crowd despite sitting inside the often deserted Manzil Souk. The space is a mix of high tables and stools, leather-seated booths and flat screen TVs beaming out an array of different sports. The walls give endless nods to the Antipodean and Saffer spirit that runs through the bar – with jerseys and photos from the three nations’ two biggest sports rugby and cricket everywhere. We grab a table next to a huge framed Springbok jersey and eye up the menu for famous tastes from the nations. But instead of dishes such as boerewors or crayfish the menu is packed with a confused mix of American and uninspired pub fare. Think pastrami, chilli dogs, Philly steak sandwiches, spaghetti carbonara and chicken schnitzel. The nearest thing to the real deal are the “braai-seasoned” fries, which are great but not nearly enough to satisfy cravings for home. Unfortunately, the search goes on.
