Nightjar Coffee

A cool café in Alserkal Avenue

Time Out Says

Have we stepped out of Dubai and into Shoreditch? That’s our first thought upon entering Alserkal Avenue’s Nightjar Coffee.

Anyone who’s been to London’s trendy neighbourhood will recognise the checked shirts, big beards and people beavering away on laptops. The only difference between here and a Brick Lane bar is that people are sipping coffee, roasted and brewed on site instead of small cans of weirdly-named craft hops.

And that’s the other thing that will hit you when you enter, the smell of the java. It’s intoxicating.

If you’re wondering if we’re being facetious with all of this, we’re not. We love Nightjar.

The industrial space fits in perfectly in the city’s arty quarter, and the long benches, while not that comfortable to sit on for a long period of time, work perfectly with the stripped-back room and with the kind of food coming from the kitchen.

It’s not the cheapest, but you are getting interesting plates cooked right in front of you. There’s no microwaving or pre-packaging going on here.

We recommend the weekend breakfast dishes, especially the hearty kedgeree and the Devon crab omelette. Salads are filling, too, with the Asian-style wombok slaw our favourite. If you’re there at lunchtime, try the house-cured salt beef sandwich with red cabbage, cheese and pickle on sourdough for a beast of a butty.

Is it a bit try-hard? Some might say, but we’re happy to embrace Nightjar in all its hipster glory.
