Time Out Says
If you’ve never had hotpot before (and we’re not talking the lamb kind your mum makes), firstly, the concept is simple, secondly, you really should make a point to try it.
And new Chinese joing Nine Squares is a great place to start. First, pick a broth, which will be brought to your table in a giant steaming pot for all to share.
Then order your ingredients (beef, lamb, veg, tofu). Finally, get cooking by plopping them into the bubbling broth and then scooping it all out when the time is right.
Nine Squares takes the experience to the next level by offering a pot that’s split into (you guessed it) nine squares. That means you can carefully keep an eye on it all, rather than losing them in the steaming liquid.
Warning, we opt for the mild spicy broth, which ends up being unbearably hot (better when we scoop out the offending chillis) but it’s all super-tasty. Don’t miss the tender beef or the deliciously smoky special homemade black tofu. We’d also recommend ordering a combo, which offers a range of vegetables to try on one large plate. It’s an absolute bargain too, at around Dhs30.
The restaurant was set up by Tony Wang, whose past career as an interior designer shows in the cosy décor. Staff are attentive (sometimes a little to much so, and eagerly supervise our cooking), and the vibe is warm.
For a fun eating experience that lets you cook your own dinner in delightful surroundings, try Nine Squares.
