Time Out Says
Park House is a light and airy space, adorned with white and sky blue tiles, with beachy tables, chairs and picnic benches. Shelves on the walls bear items such as sunscreen, Turkish hamman towels, sun hats and so on, that are all for sale. We have mixed feelings about this element of seaside cashing in. Relevant, arguably practical, yes, but a little tacky.
Also against the wall is the menu and counter where you can choose one of the very tempting cakes and order your food. This is an ‘order and pay at the counter’ kind of venue, and the chatty, friendly girl standing there was patient, helpful and engaging. Thanks to her, we’ve now learnt that you ‘can’t make friends with salad’ (a line we’re pretty sure she borrowed from Homer Simpson). Despite that, we did still sample the salad on offer, starting our meal with one of the small portions, divided between different recipes (as she recommended). These were well devised, however, the two we tried had suffered during the course of the day – the slices of apple looked a little brown and the spinach leaves varied between perfectly crisp and a little mushy and wilted.
From a more substantial selection primarily focused on burgers (including a vegetarian one) and sandwiches, the fish and chips seemed like the perfect dish for an evening at the beach. At Dhs45 a plate – including two little fillets of battered cod and tartare sauce that tasted homemade alongside the chips – the dish was also good value, as well as well made.
Park House feels like it’s not quite right yet. It doesn’t stand out as streets above the competition like its big brother Taqado definitely did when we first visited back in 2012. Having said that, we like the Park House spirit; there is room for it to grow, and we suspect it eventually will.
