Planet Bollywood

Overpriced Indian Bur Dubai

Time Out Says

From Time Out Dubai Eating Out 2008

If you imagine Planet Hollywood in all it’s A-list calorific warmth (think Marilyn Monroe’s toothbrush in a cabinet, Shirley Temple’s on the menu and Buddy Holly chirping overhead), you’ll be disappointed on entering its Indian near-namesake.

It’s mildly intimidating, and that’s even before you reach the ‘dining area’ – complete with its plastic chairs and troupe of lethargic girls lolling about the stage. Intimidating soon turns towards distressing, as the strobe lighting and warbling Bollywood singer (the only male on stage) reaches its crescendo.

If you’re looking for an intimate soiree, do a swift U-turn to the nearest taxi rank. Perhaps the only solace in these stressful environs is the food. Despite being a tad costly for standard Indian fare (Dhs72 for a curry feels wrong as the smoke machine starts up), the Bollywood special, which boasts chicken fresh from the tandoor and smattered with a glorious mix of garlic and spices, is a true winner.

Unfortunately, as tasty as the murgh gulmohar (rich and juicy chicken drumsticks dripping in tandoori spices) and creamy the raita is, there’s something utterly bizarre about having your five senses blasted all at once.
