Predominantly a pizza restaurant, Red Tomato does a roaring trade in delivering thin-crust, wood-fired oven-cooked classics across the city. Yet surprisingly it feels like they haven’t overlooked their restaurant despite the army of scooters waiting outside. We like the faux rustic Italian charm and the sense of unpretentious intimacy it creates. Staff are friendly and the open kitchen creates a cosseting atmosphere. With the pizzas, despite some of the toppings lacking a little in quality, they’ve pretty much got it sussed and we think you need to be somewhat of a connoisseur to object to what is served. Beyond pizza, things aren’t quite so clever, with cheap ingredients and a lack of sophisticated flavours letting the side down. Essentially, Red Tomato is a pizza joint and when in Rome...
