Time Out Says
AFTERNOON TEA SPECIAL
Straight from the Big Apple (and shows such as Gossip Girl) to City Walk, Sarabeth’s is an American eatery with a focus on hearty sandwiches and delicious home-baked deserts.
While we aren’t here for breakfast or lunch – though we will be back to try both based on this visit – we are to check out the afternoon tea and to find out whether the café lives up to its far-reaching reputation (the American branch is popular with the likes of Kanye West and Taylor Swift).
The restaurant is quiet when we visit, which is a shame for this sophisticated, yet homey spot.
All wood and marble with huge low-hanging glass balls providing the low-lit lighting, the interior décor was overseen by founder and master baker herself, Sarabeth Levine and wouldn’t be out of place in a café in Paris.
The selection arrives at the table on a three-tier presentation stand that looks like a gold bird cage, and serving sizes are extremely generous.
A substantial slice of sour dough is heaped with smashed avocado while the smoked salmon and cream open sandwiches are generously loaded with fish.
But it’s the cornflake-coated chicken with pickles sandwich that is the real showstopper – so much so that we ask whether it is available as a main.
The scones are a good size too and come pre-prepared – saving you the conundrum of whether it’s cream or jam first (Sarabeth is of the opinion that it’s the former FYI). There’s no jam here though, just fresh raspberries and strawberries heaped onto the not-too-sweet cream, while juicy raisins and sultanas are peppered throughout the flaky, soft scone.
Working our way down to the bottom we discover, alongside some cute little pastries, muffins and cupcakes, a selection of homemade cookies and some gooey brownies, which taste as good as they look.
While the tea is recommended for two it’s huge, which is fine as we’re more than happy to take the leftovers home for seconds, it’s that tasty.

If it’s good enough for Kanye…
Fans of the hit US TV show Gossip Girl may already be familiar with New York bakery and café Sarabeth’s – after all it was Blair Waldorf’s favourite brunch spot.
With a thumbs up from the fictional “IT girl” herself we head to its newest branch in Mall of the Emirates with high expectations.
The US eatery, which already has a branch in City Walk, has a small area showcasing its delicious-looking desserts – but there’s no private dining area, with tables placed in an open space in the middle of the bustling mall.
We take a seat in the compact area and browse through the menu of breakfast dishes, appetisers, salads, sandwiches, mains, sides and desserts (including an afternoon tea) and there’s even a dedicated vegan menu.
If you’re after something savoury go for the halloumi and avocado sandwich, which comes served alongside a portion of perfectly-seasoned chips. The sandwich is served in the softest focaccia bread we’ve had in a long time and as far as sandwiches go it’s decent, while the addition of red onions and red peppers give it a pleasant crunch.
Popular for its desserts, we opt decide for the pistachio milk cake – a moist cake topped with whipped cream and served with a jug of pistachio milk to pour on top. It’s as decadent as cakes come but you’ll have to have a super-sweet tooth as be warned, it’s one that’s probably best shared with a mate.
It might not wow, but if you’re in need of mid-shopping dessert, it’s an okay pitstop.
