Time Out Says
Saray Sultan is hidden from Jumeirah’s arterial Beach Road, and with the popular Reem Al Bawadi downstairs, it struggles to get a look in. A shame, because much of what it does is very authentic, and a bit of tweaking could drastically improve the atmosphere. The meat sauté is far too oily and fatty, but the kebabs are juicy and the Saray mixed mezze is very good. The pillowy, fresh bread however, is excellent – don’t leave without trying some. It’s a friendly spot and the cheerful owner is often around with his kids, checking on tables and offering complimentary samples of fruity tea (of which there’s a huge variety). Aryan is also on the menu, while the Turkish coffee is served on beautiful copper trays with pots of perfect Turkish delight. Everything is sourced in person, we are told, in Istanbul. Plain table tops and brown walls make the venue uninspiring, but a few bright tablecloths and some colourful tiling could really transform it. The terrace would also be perfect for leisurely tea and mezze with the addition of a few more fairy lights and plants. There’s room for improvement, but this isn’t one to write off just yet.
