Shooters - Jebel Ali

My date and I, however, were looking for some sort of reward for our journey from Dubai Marina to Jebel Ali: something along the lines of a convivial, bustling restaurant serving filling and tasty Tex-Mex fare. While Shooters was busy when we arrived, its atmosphere was muted – the background music was more of a background drone, and guests appeared to be engaged in hushed conversation rather than cheerful chit-chat. Nevertheless, we were greeted by friendly, accommodating staff who seated us by the large windows looking out onto a floodlit shooting range, where we could see a man in the distance wielding a shotgun.
The restaurant was nicely finished in dark hues, punctuated by the occasional TV screening English football; the menu consisted of Tex-Mex staples, burgers and steaks. We mulled the options while nibbling on complimentary nachos, then kicked off by ordering the ‘Tidbits Combo’ – a platter of, well, tidbits, such as potato wedges, onion rings and chicken wings. Sadly, the combo didn’t amount to much – the wedges were little more than lazily cut pieces of lightly fried potato, the chicken was suffocated with breadcrumbs and provided little in the way of meat, and the onion rings were, much like the potatoes – loosely cut and insufficiently battered.
It was hard to miss the arrival of my date’s beef fajitas: the impressive mound of beef hissed, sizzled and spat on its hot plate, while the tortillas were presented on a separate plate (placed, rather inconveniently, out of my date’s reach). But for all the promise, the meat proved tough and flavourless, the tortillas were cold and limp and the four sauces tasted worryingly similar despite having very different appearances.
Leaving my date to contend with her fajitas, I turned my attention to the ‘cowboy steak chop’ I’d ordered out of curiosity (I’d never heard of a steak chop before). I’d requested it to be cooked medium rare, but
after a couple of mouthfuls my plate was swimming in blood. Even if I’d ordered my steak rare, I’d have been worried by how undercooked it was. The vegetables, meanwhile, were laid out on a small dish. I counted two limp asparagus stalks, two baby sweetcorn pieces, a trio of small carrots and maybe four to five green beans. Despite appearing as though they hadn’t been cooked, the vegetables still somehow managed to be limp and flaccid.
Perhaps the burgers would have been a better option, but from the evidence of our order there are some serious issues that need to be resolved in the kitchen before the new-look Shooters can expect to lure customers out from further afield, or even keep the guests of nearby Jebel Ali Beach Resort happy.
