Time Out Says
As our Best New Nightlife Venue 2018, we were thrilled when we heard Soho Garden was revamping its menu with the aim of becoming not only a super-club, but a dining destination. But on visiting, we couldn’t be more disappointed.
It doesn’t start well. When booking our table in advance, we’re told we can’t have a table past 9pm, else we face a Dhs2,000 minimum spend. It’s early, but we go with it.
But we’re then told we must arrive strictly by 7.15pm, or lose our table. To whom, exactly, we don’t know, because when we arrive at Meydan the place is practically closed, with padlocks round the gate.
After finding an obscure route in, we’re seated and promptly ignored for 20 minutes while the staff clean – there are boxes and bags of rubbish everywhere. When we do get a waiter’s attention, we’re told the kitchen isn’t open until 8pm. So we’ve been forced to arrive early to an empty bar, and now we can’t order for 40 minutes? We’re getting ready to walk.
We do order, though, opting for some chicken tenders to start (which are so soggy and have such a strange after-taste that we send them back), and smoked salmon gravlax – which is mediocre.
There are two main menu items we are particularly looking forward to trying – seared yellow fin tuna, and the goat’s cheese, artichoke and spinach cannelloni. But neither of these are available. Disappointed, we opt for the red shrimp cocktail, which is smaller than one of our starters, plus the Soho Garden Angus beef burger with truffle mayo, caramelised onion and smoked cheddar. Both of which are fine, but nothing special.
By the time we’re done repeatedly ordering, sending back food and being ignored, we lose our appetite, and just can’t wait to leave. We’ll stick to clubbing here in future.
The bill (for two)
1x smoked salmon gravlax Dhs75
1x red shrimp cocktail Dhs70
1x Soho Garden burger Dhs120
1x sweet potato fries Dhs35
1x large water Dhs25
Total (excl service) Dhs325
The bottom line
Come for the club frolics, leave for food.
