Starbucks is world-renowned for its coffee: we tried the tea test

We all know how masterfully Starbucks has marketed their dark roast blend of coffee, but do they make a good cup of tea? We visited the City Centre branch at that time in the afternoon when a cuppa and a piece of cake are the order of the day. As with all Starbucks outlets this one is busy, buzzing and bright. There are seating arrangements to suit everyone: comfy sofas in quiet corners, small tables and chairs amidst the bustle of shoppers staggering in with bulging bags, and you can also sit outside on the mall concourse.

Anyone who is pedantic about the etiquette of tea making will have to close their eyes to the chunky coffee mugs filled with boiling water and a teabag — no chance of a pot here. You can have a small, medium or large mug for seven, eight or nine Dirhams. However the tea itself is one of the trendy ‘designer labels’ of the industry. The ‘Tazo’ range includes; Chai, Zen, Darjeeling, Citron, Earl Grey and even a ‘calming’ blend (much needed at the end of a gruelling shopathon). Our caramel frapuccino (Dhs13) was a watery ice blend with artificial cream and artificial caramel swirled on top — don’t try one. From a fridge full of hefty confections we chose the cinnamon roll (Dhs6) which was stale and like eating cotton wool, and the caramel apple slice (Dhs8) which was heavy and stodgy. The wild berry scone (Dhs7) was the redeeming feature — a massive rustic triangle (but don’t expect clotted cream and jam with it here). Starbucks is good for a mug of tea but if you are having a slab of cake choose it carefully.
