Time Out Says

Enviably positioned at the centre of Sheikh Zayed Road’s busiest strip, between the Crowne Plaza Dubai and Shangri-La Hotel Dubai, the flagship branch of relatively new chain Sushi Counter offers classy yet affordable eats among a mix of five-star and fast food neighbours. A lot of effort has gone into both the design of the space and menu – both contemporary, minimalist and distinctly Japanese. It’s a shame, then, that the food doesn’t quite live up to expectations. The sleek menu promises a wide selection of more exotic dishes in addition to the usual suspects, such as smoked duck breast California roll, yuzu scallop rolls, quinoa rolls and even ‘burgers’, comprised of rice, raw fish and Japanese condiments, encased in a heart-shaped wafer. Unfortunately, despite a huge range of tastes promised, there’s mystifyingly little flavour in anything, whether you’ve ordered fresh crab summer rolls or shrimp curry California rolls. For prices like these, the maki simply isn’t moreish enough.
