This new Marina spot for shawarma calls itself ‘gourmet’

Time Out Says

Granted, a new shawarma shop might not be a big surprise in Dubai. This one, S’Wich, certainly comes with a point of difference though. With the menu devised by chef Izu Ani, who heads up the kitchen at popular Dubai restaurant La Serre, the tagline of ‘gourmet shawarma’ is not an exaggeration.

Inside this small, fast-food outlet in Marina, the space is decorated in black and white, with a small kitchen and preparation area on view at the back. Next to a minimal amount of space for dine-in customers (two tables), sits a book shelf, stocked with hefty tomes of food-related literature.

On the menu, you’ll find a vast selection of ingredients (from veal or Portobello mushrooms, through to harissa, sriracha or hoisin) to help you create your own wrap. Or, opt for one of the signature shawarma recipes.
The duck shawarma was a wonderful sandwich, where the combination of plump yet slightly crispy duck flesh, and the sweet fruitiness of fig, immediately brought to mind the Chinese flavour sensation of duck and plum. Adding to that soft tones of garlic, and fresh, wilted rocca leaves; the combination was delicious. The saj itself had been gently griddled to seal in the wrap, adding a golden brown colour to the bread as well as a lovely crisp texture. Equally well conceived and prepared, the chicken shawarma was made with juicy chunks of chicken, a little pickle and lettuce for a fresh and classic touch, plus a very soft, but aromatic truffle sauce.

From the selection of side dishes, diners can go down a semi-Arabian, and slightly healthier route with dishes such as quinoa fattoush or moutabal. Or, you can indulge with fries (plain, or dressed in paprika, garlic and parsley, or truffle and Parmesan), sweet potato fries, or Spanish-style patatas bravas. The truffle and Parmesan fries were good chips, sweet and creamy on the inside, and a little crisp on the outside. Although something rather strange seemed to have happened, since all the truffle scented fries sat at the bottom of the box, and only the fries on the very surface were coated with (a sparse amount of) Parmesan.

Despite that last hitch, the shawarma at S’Wich are just as the shop boasts, most certainly gourmet. While not many guests appear to opt for dine-in over takeaway at this venue, whichever option you choose this is an excellent spot for a quick but excellent shawarma fix with a difference.
