Taperia

Sizzling Spanish tapas is the order of the day at this polo resort restaurant

Time Out Says

Visiting The St. Regis Dubai Al Habtoor Polo Resort is an occasion in itself, and we have high expectations on heading to its Spanish restaurant.

The hotel is beautiful, with high arches and gleaming marble as far as the eye can see. It’s eerily quiet, but the flamenco music seeping down the hall loosens us up a bit, and we almost sashay into the lounge-style eatery.

Unlike the rest of the hotel, Taperia is busy during our mid week visit, and most of the tables are full. The restaurant is all exposed brick and low lighting with a few decorative barrels strewn here and there. The seating is arranged around an open kitchen, where tapas are prepared before you.

We’re shown outside to the large terrace area, but choose a candlelit table indoors within viewing range of the chef, who is merrily twirling flatbread dough.

The menu is extensive without being overwhelming and we decide on a selection of meatballs, prawns, calamari, croquettes and Manchego cheese. The calamari is fresh with crispy batter and the meatballs come in a thick, tasty tomato sauce.

The beef croqueta are nice enough, as is the Manchego – but neither blows our socks off.

The stand-outs are definitely La Bomba croquettes, which are stuffed with potato, wagyu beef, aioli and brava sauce.

The sauce is perfectly spiced and the beef is tender and delicious. Sadly, the prawns taste like they’ve been languishing in the Spanish sun for longer than a tourist on the Costa Del Sol.

Prawns aside, it’s a pleasant evening. The slightly remote location puts us off becoming a regular, although the vibe is laid-back and the food is tasty if you’re looking to try some tapas.
