The Academy Café

Dubai Creek Golf Club cafe offers an ‘on par’ experience for golfers

Time Out Says

Among a spree of new eating and drinking options that have opened within the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club is The Academy Café. Located within the reception of the golf club, the indoor dining area shares its space with the shop, where you can by golfing necessities and accessories, while the café counter sits next to the club’s reception desk. It is evident that this café is designed very much to be a club house-meets-holding pen for pre- and post-course golfers to take it easy, rather than (realistically) a destination in its own right. Outside, however, there is a pleasant terrace, which overlooks the immediate stages of the course and will no doubt be a pleasant location in the winter.

While the indoor space is pretty simple, there are huge brown leather-look armchairs to sink into (presumably a treat after a tiring round), while the colour scheme is a fitting mix of white, brown and bright, spring green. And, cutely, the floor is covered with a grass-like green carpet.

The staff are very pleasant, and were admirably quick to point out that the counter full of sandwiches and salads is for display only, and each order will actually be freshly made on request. Aside from this selection, the menu also offers several hot plate dishes such as pasta, burgers and more. There are also plenty of freshly made mocktails and juices to choose from too, and sweet items such as cakes and pastries.

The carrot and spinach salad was, as the server said, a generous portion, filled with fresh and crisp tasting baby spinach leaves, topped with carrots and red peppers, nicely caramelised from roasting, and huge chunks of (actually, quite ordinary) feta cheese. This was sprinkled with a healthy crunch of pumpkin seeds and a honey-dominant dressing that was a little too syrupy and sweet for an otherwise great salad.

Two burger options on the menu offer either an Aussie-style beef patty, teamed with pineapple and beetroot, or an English inspired fish burger. The Aussie burger sampled was acceptable, but far from exceptional. The patty itself tasted fairly fatty and poor quality, and the cooking of it was also inconsistent to the point of being off-putting. The flavour of beetroot and pineapple are, granted, very much an acquired Antipodean taste. However, there was an overly sharp and sour quality from the pineapple, and while the artfully paper-thin round of beetroot looked attractive, as a direct result of this thinness, it actually added little of that pleasant sensation of freshness to the overall eating experience. The Aussie burger came with a side dish of choice, and the sweet potato fries we tried were perfect, with a lovely crunchy, sugary texture to the edges.

The Academy Café is a pleasant enough place to grab some healthy and filling sustenance and perhaps a coffee after a long game on the greens. Even with the ambient views of the golf course from the terrace, though, it isn’t necessarily a café to travel to especially.
