The Carving Board
Time Out Says
The Carving Board specialises in gourmet-style sandwiches, and if you’re after something a little bit out of the ordinary then you’re bound to find something to pique your interest.
The City Walk location is the first branch of the chain outside the US. Billed as a “fast-casual speciality sandwich franchise that transforms classic comfort dishes into sandwiches”, The Carving Board already has branches in California – including in Hollywood and West LA – and has more than 50 creations on its sandwich menu. So we’re pretty sure whatever it is you’re looking for sandwiched together, you’ll find it here.
Upon entering the store, located in albeit the quieter end of the Meraas destination, our gaze is immediately diverted towards the spaghetti meatball sarnie advertised above the counter. Double carb, we hear you say? Not quite, thankfully – it’s something far more interesting than that.
We’re talking spaghetti fashioned into bread slices. Unusual? Yes. Satisfying? For sure. Could we eat another? Certainly not, this is a messy but wholly filling lunchtime treat, and it’s not one for the weight watchers among us.
We also opt for The Bohemian, a hot sandwich stuffed with Portobello mushrooms, basil pesto, sautéed red peppers and mozzarella. Sadly, it doesn’t hit the heights of its pasta-based companion – the bread is cold in the middle and an abundance of oil makes this a tricky and slightly unsatisfying eat.
You can also get your hands on a range of other sandwiches, burgers and salads, plus some tasty fresh juices which, if the portion size had been perhaps a bit more generous, we’d have been a bit more accepting of its Dhs25 price tag. But, with dishes averaging out in the Dhs40-50 price range, we’re not put off a return visit.
The Bottom Line
A novel spot for a quick lunch.
