The Duck Hook
Time Out Says
Fitting then (and not just a touch kitsch) that this bar-restaurant’s riff on the classic is made of confit duck leg, wrapped around a runny duck egg. Oh, go on then.
Named after a shot that curves hard to the left, if you’re a right-handed golfer, The Duck Hook is not your ordinary 19th hole. And never less that than when you’re reclined outside, soaking up the views of Downtown Dubai, Burj Khalifa tickling the clouds in the distance.
On weekends, service isn’t quite primed to deal with the number of golfers pouring in, so prepare to wait a short while for that first pint. Spend that time perusing the menu, which features a range of swankified pub classics, from confit duck leg to beef Wellington, tuna steak to butter chicken.
During the day, sarnies are also available (beware the cheese toastie) for lunch.
Skip the sampler platter and press on past the pâté, with its oddly sand-like texture – mains are where The Duck Hook shows more mettle. Fish and chips is a solid choice, with great colour and crunch to the batter. While that Chicken Ruby curry is almost affrontingly bland, the pies, fully clothed in flaky pastry, fare better.
This golf club spot has promise – and real estate to boot – but its technique needs work if it wants to be a real player in the pub food arena.
