The Galliard

Turkish cooking meets the restaurant of European cuisine

Time Out Says

There’s a lot going on at The Galliard. A Turkish-Mediterranean restaurant transported to Downtown Dubai by way of Istanbul, promising dishes inspired by Spain, France and Italy, you’d be forgiven for not knowing quite what to expect.

Then there’s the fact its launch party at the end of 2018 featured a performance by American R&B star Kelis, and that its blurb on the Address Downtown’s website promises dancing waiters.

While we can’t confirm the staff shake their thing on a nightly basis (soz), there’s certainly more than enough happening on the menu to occupy your attention. And if that doesn’t do it, the glamorous roaming saxophonist just might.

But let’s get back to the food. Restaurants whose menus skip flagrantly across the continent don’t usually get much right, which is what (aside from its visitor-worthy Burj Khalifa views) makes The Galliard such an interesting proposition. Aside from the fact you’ve got to choose them from an iPad menu (when will this torture end?), none of the dishes disappoint.

From the appetisers, go for the delicate Turkish çiğ börek – slender rolls of crisp pastry filled with tiny slivers of minced beef – and the goat’s cheese salad, topped with deep-fried bites of the pungent signature ingredient.

Of the mains, The Galliard mantı is a fittingly Turkish highlight, filled with minced beef and onions, and surrounded by lashings of melted butter and yoghurt. Rich and creamy, it’s as decadent as the Downtown setting, and one of the best value mains on the menu at Dhs94.

There’s a hullabaloo on the table behind us as a live cooking session takes place, and our blatant interest sees us handed freshly filled tacos.

It’s beautifully cooked beef, if a little short on seasoning, but the showmanship of the staff livens up the atmosphere.

And perhaps that’s what The Galliard is more about. The setting, the beguiling service, the singers and saxophonist. Once we’re assured of some shape-throwing staff, we’ll be back for more of that mantı.
