Time Out Says

Although Dubai is many things, one area that it can be slightly lacking in is history. So when a world-famous vessel opens as a floating hotel, it’s all aboard.

The QE2 docked in Dubai’s Port Rashid ten years ago, and earlier this year opened as a luxury hotel. And as a well as a healthy dose of nostalgia, the QE2 brings with it fine dining spot, The Queen’s Grill.

Entering the ship is a like going into a time warp. It’s meant to, however, as the ship is kitted out as it was in its heyday. And for cruise ship aficionados, dining aboard the ship is not to be missed. Just  journeying to the restaurant – exploring the narrow, low-ceilinged corridors, old-school ballroom and (inactive) casino – is an experience in itself.

The Queen’s Grill is a smallish, retro (some might say dated) looking space, with tables adorned in crisp white cloths. And the menu is inspired by that on the ship’s maiden voyage in 1969. But don’t be put off, it’s classic with a modern twist. There’s a four-course set menu with several choices for each course, and vegetarian diners are well catered for with their own version (that’s Dhs100 less).

While it’s not full, there’s a pleasant buzz, and as soon as word gets out about the food, we’re sure it will pick up. Sometimes unique venues rely on the setting, but here the food holds its own.

Both the roasted cauliflower soup and lobster bisque are like a deliciously comforting hug in a bowl. The game terrine – meaty, rich and tasty – and the slow-cooked Scottish salmon – super fresh – are also hits.

Of the mains, the tenderloin has the edge, the rich meat pairing deliciously with a sweet vanilla parsnip purée. The rolled chicken, while not the most imaginative, is lifted by Parmesan polenta and truffle. The moreish deconstructed lemon meringue is also worthy of a mention.

While it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, if you’re after fine food and something a little bit different, it’s time to don that (imaginary) tiara and dash up that famed gangplank.

The bottom line
Spot-on food in a unique setting.
