Time Out Says
Exposed brick, distressed wood, oversized cushions and a sleek open kitchen hung with big, shiny brass pots and pans make Trattoria Toscana an attractive place to dine. There’s some artistic chalk boards and a quaint street ice cream cart, too. In fact, inside feels slightly more pleasant than outside, where the terrace is generic and subject to heavy tourist traffic. The food is decent, if not perfect. The calamari is neither here nor there, but the fried whitebait are meaty and fresh, while the meatballs have a lovely, home-made, fall-apart-fresh quality and come in a tomato sauce with a nice kick. There are some interesting baked pastas, including one with (slightly too fatty) duck meat and orange essence, baked with cheese. The garganelli is just on the wrong side of al dente but overall it still makes for a tasty, comforting and subtly sweet dish. There are some interesting pizza choices here too (truffle fondue, porcini mushrooms, smoked beef ham and rocket), but the ultimate test is to go for a simple classic, and the margherita really excels. A crispy base, nicely seasoned sauce and liberal use of fresh buffalo mozzarella.
