Ultra Brasserie

A healthy café with a wide range of vegan and gluten-free dishes

Time Out Says

Popular with Marina residents, this low-key eatery isn’t fancy, but it’s bright, airy, friendly and good for a quick bite.

Ultra Brasserie is especially busy for brekkies, with Marina gym-goers, as well as for lunch with office workers in Marina Plaza, so there’s always a pleasant buzz about the place, too.

We visit at lunch, however, and the service is surprisingly on the slow side.

There’s a wide range of dishes, including some all-day breakfast options, and we go for the mushrooms and avocado on toast, having heard many great things about the dish.

Visually, it’s a delight. A hefty chunk of sourdough toast comes smothered in a generous portion of crushed avocado and whipped goat’s cheese. It’s filling and tasty. The abundance of mushrooms on top are meaty and there’s a good variety, though it’s all a little bland and dry, which lets down the rest of the dish.

We also choose the fish and chips. The fish is grilled rather than fried, making it a healthy twist on a British classic, and ideal for a not-too-heavy lunch. The chips are pretty good too, but avoid the overly oniony salad – especially if an afternoon meeting is on the agenda.

Ultra isn’t cheap, but a wide range of vegan and gluten-free options make it a top choice if that’s what you’re looking for, too.

There’s also a second branch in Emaar Square, so if you’re Downtown and after a healthy pit-stop, visit Ultra.

The wide selection of dishes make this café worth visiting, but some of the menu items need to up their game in terms of flavour to really excel.
