Time Out Says
Urth Caffé, which hails from California, opened in October, and already seems to have become a go-to spot. Unusually for City Walk, at which we’ve become accustomed to be the sole diners in various restaurants, the place is packed when we visit on a weekend.
The first Urth Caffé was set up in 1991 at Manhattan Beach in LA, and it now has locations across the city as well as outposts in Saudia Arabia, and Japan. And although the Dubai version doesn’t have the mellow, cool Californian vibes that we expect the Stateside branches have, it’s still a fun spot.
It’s a bit of an odd setup – with outside seating by the road, while the inside is open plan within the mall. However, the décor is fun, and if you choose to dine in the quirky spot around the corner you’ll be perched next to bookcases and a giant olive tree.
The brand was established after the founders met a “passionate coffee farmer” from Peru, and made it their mission to provide “health-conscious coffee”. Dishes are also promised to be organic, supporting sustainable practises, although there seems to be some confusion on the menu.
Although gluten-free items are labelled as such, there’s a warning saying that they should be avoided by coeliacs just in case. And vegan doesn’t seem to mean egg- or dairy-free either – despite being marked plant-based, most dishes are actually vegetarian.
The food is excellent, however. Avocado on toast is fresh and tasty, while eggs verde come perfectly poached on top of heaps of green veggies and Parmesan shavings.
Eggs salmone is also delicious, with poached eggs, generous helpings of salmon, rocket and sourdough toast smothered in lemon mascarpone. It’s indulgent without being overly rich and is a real breakfast treat.
Don’t miss the homemade cakes, biscuits and pies either – we recommend the double chocolate chip cookies.
Menu confusion and haphazard service aside, this is a great addition to the area, especially for breakfast.
