Time Out Says
Filled with warm reds and oranges, vibrant drapes and intimate alcoves, this upmarket Indian in the heart of Souk Madinat, compete with show kitchen and an outdoor terrace, promises much on first inspection. The menu is just as interesting, featuring starters such as the highly recommended murgh basil tikka (succulent tandoor-grilled chicken breast with a sweet basil and garlic marinade), a small selection of more unusual soups as well as a range of grilled meats, curries and plenty of vegetarian options. Presentation can’t be faulted, and it’s clear that Ushna is going for more of an haute cuisine approach, yet given the high prices and accompanying great expectations, not every dish is a roaring success – some, like the meen moilee coconut fish curry, are a tad underwhelming, in fact. Still, the slick service and plush surrounds make up for this to some extent, and if you factor in the touristy location, you’ll be able to better accept (or at least understand) the inflated bill when it arrives.
