Verve Bar & Brasserie
Time Out Says
That it opened in Dubai Media City seemed something of a surprise, but in its prominent setting as the flagship restaurant on the ground floor of the brand-new Grand Plaza Mövenpick, Verve Bar & Brasserie has found a comfortable place as a wonderful new fine-dining restaurant on the Dubai scene.
And so, with the promise of European and British fine-dining, we don our swankiest clobber and shine our shoes.
While the area around the hotel is still being developed, the interior of Verve is exquisite, verging on timeless. Gold and brass furnishings adorn the restaurant, and the entire place is bright, airy, cavernous – simply, it’s swankiness personified.
The service is exceptionally professional, in a friendly way, not stuffy – so you don’t end up feeling like you’re being judged for your menu choices.
And the menu is a joy to behold, with an elegance and sophistication befitting of its surroundings. We opt for the dressed crab claw salad accompanied by avocado and lime, which is perfectly prepared and delivered swiftly.
In addition, our starter is made up with the oft-perfunctory burrata – however this is something else, with a lemon, truffle and thyme pesto that can’t be described as anything other than utterly stunning.
Pumpkin, sage and truffle ravioli takes us by surprise with a crispier, baked finish for a refreshing twist, with a delicate smear of Parmesan velouté (that’s sauce, btw) to match.
In addition, some fantastically flaky poached and seared salmon topped with a lemon butter sauce completes our main course. It’s all delicious.
Sharing a dessert, we’re presented with a generous portion of apple tart tatin, with individually-wrapped, spiced and caramelised apple wedges in parcels of pastry topped with a gorgeous vanilla bean ice cream.
For some reason, the chef’s not 100 percent happy with the dessert (not that we’d noticed), and they scrub it from the bill. The gesture epitomises this restaurant, really: perfectionism, with a humble twist.
We’ll be back, hungrier and keener than ever before.
