With Dubai’s blue skies and illuminating sunlight, stepping into a darkened mall is a bit of a shame (air con aside, of course).
The city’s newest mall, which will be Dubai’s biggest with four million square feet of leasable area, will be partially covered by the state-of-the-art retractable skylight that is being designed by OpenAire construction company.
The retractable roof will be approximately 77m x 418m, with a fixed glass half dome at each end projecting about 47m from each end of the skylight, resulting in an overall length of about 512m – which is about the length of five football pitches.
The skylight will travel from the fully closed position to fully opened (and vice versa) in 25 minutes, and the skylight control system will be fully integrated with the mall’s building management system, allowing for full control of the skylight through the mall’s main control room.
The Dhs6.1billion project will be located at the heart of Deira Islands, Nakheel’s new, 15.3 sq km waterfront city that is part of Dubai’s 2021.
The four-island development, which will transform the area traditionally known as Old Dubai into a world-class retail, tourism, living and leisure hub, will be home to more than 250,000 people when complete.
With a total built-up area of 10.3 million sq ft, including a 3.8 million sq ft multi-storey car park with 8,400 spaces, Deira Mall will feature over 1,000 shops, cafes, restaurants and entertainment outlets across three floors.
