Love and Label in Dubai

Time Out meets Nahida Kaddoura, one half of the design team behind local luxury accessories brand Love and Label

Why did you decide to call your brand Love and Label?
It’s two things women are infatuated with: love and labels.

How did you and your business partner, Farah Asmar, come up with the concept?
We were at the Dead Sea in Jordan and we decided we wanted to start our own handbag and shoe collection. Then we went to a café and started scribbling designs and trying to get our concept together.

That’s very proactive! But why shoes and handbags?
We really felt there was a market for affordable luxury in bags and clutches, that it was something missing in the market. That’s how it started; the footwear line came out of it very randomly. The clutches were our first initiation into the business.

Do you use exotic leathers?
It looks as though you do. Actually no, we use calf leather, and it’s printed with animal skin. We do use some natural python for the shoes. Mainly, we like to focus on fun, eccentric and colourful prints; stuff that would jump out to our customers.

Who’s your favourite accessories designer?
Farah and I have different taste. I love Jimmy Choo. She likes Chloé. We try to design similar shoes and bags, but they’re adapted for the Middle Eastern market.

How have you adapted them?
A lot of women over here like to wear simple outfits and dress them up with accessories, so we used bright fabrics and interesting textures. For example, we have the Maria bag in electric blue. It’s fiery and bold – a real statement piece.

What kind of reaction have you had?
We’ve had a really good response. People like the quality of the product, and the price point is really important to us. We tried to create something that people could have in their wardrobe forever, but that wouldn’t be super-duper expensive. It seems to be a formula that has worked.
Love and Label is available at S*uce, The Dubai Mall (04 339 9696), The Village Mall (04 342 1961); and Marami, The Dubai Mall (04 434 3536)
