iPhone v BlackBerry

Should you buy the new iPhone or the new Blackberry?

1/2

Both iPhone and BlackBerry have just launched new phones, but which one is best value? We check out du and Etisalat’s packages

iPhone 4

New capabilities

• Face Time video talking (though this service is intermittent in the UAE)
• HD video recording
• The ability to work on multiple apps at once
• The highest-resolution screen ever seen on a phone (960 x 640 pixels at 326 ppi)

Etisalat deals
There are several year-long contract plans.
Plan one: an upfront charge of Dhs2,049 for a 16GB phone and Dhs2,399 for 32GB, then a monthly rental of Dhs99 (including 125 minutes of talk time, 125 text messages and 1GB of data).
Plan two: an upfront charge of Dhs499 for a 16GB phone and Dhs849 for a 32GB phone, then monthly instalments of Dhs249 (including 125 minutes of talk time, 125 text message and 2GB of data).
Plan three: no upfront payment for a 16GB phone and Dhs350 for 32GB, then Dhs499 a month for 500 minutes of talk time, 500 texts and 2GB of data.
Offers ongoing, but for offers two and three you must have been a customer with Etisalat for at least six months. Call 800 77 666 for info

du deals
If you want a postpaid plan, you must be on an Elite or Elite 100 contract. If you have a regular number (du also offers the rather odd gold, silver and bronze personalised numbers) you can buy the 16GB phone for Dhs2,449, or the 32GB phone for Dhs2,849, then get 1GB usage free if you spend Dhs100 on your phone each month. If you have a special number, there are a host of special offers to look into as well.
If you want a pay-as-you-go plan, you can buy the 16GB phone for Dhs2,559, or the 32GB phone for Dhs2,849. You then get 1GB of free data every month for a year as long as you spend Dhs100 the previous month (except for the first month, where you get 1GB free anyway).
Offers ongoing. Call 055 567 8155 for info

BlackBerry Torch

New capabilities

• A sliding screen action to open the classic QWERTY keyboard
• An improved web browser (let’s be honest, BlackBerry web browsing doesn’t cut it against market competitors)
• Pinch-and-zoom touch-screen capabilities
• Integrated social media feeds
• A five-megapixel camera

Etisalat deals
Postpaid customers who sign up for a one-year unlimited domestic package contract for Dhs185 per month are given a discount on the Torch 9800, so it costs Dhs1,499 (it’s normally Dhs2,799).
Offer valid until November 19. Call 800 77 666 for info

du deals
Buy the Blackberry Torch 9800 for Dhs2,699 and on an unlimited national calls package you won’t pay anything for the first six months; for unlimited global calls you’ll pay Dhs130 for the first six months. After that it costs Dhs130 for unlimited national calls, and Dhs260 for international calls.
Offer ongoing. Call 055 567 8155 for info
