We look at the forthcoming Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience and Fashion Forward events.
For those on Dubai’s style circuit, the next two weeks are sort of a big deal. First up, the second season of homegrown sartorial event Fashion Forward runs from Tuesday October 15 to Friday October 18. As well as fashion discussions, you get to attend runway shows, after-parties and a lot more besides. Before that, the first ever Vogue Fashion Experience Dubai kicks off for one day on Thursday October 10. Here, we meet the designers behind one label showing at Fashion Forward, and reveal our editor’s picks of the best public fashion events across both affairs.
Meet the designers
We go backstage with the creative brains behind fashion label The Emperor 1688, and chat to British-Iranian brothers Haman, Babak and Farhan Golkar.
Why are you participating in Fashion Forward?
It’s important for any designer to showcase their ideas on a runway presentation. This is the way buyers actively see the concept.
What do you expect to get out of the event?
On a personal level, it will see us show our vision as designers. We have something to say about the way men should dress, so having a platform to show what we think and feel about fashion is very humbling. We aim to be the brand for the UAE that Paul Smith is for England. We are a brand that is born here and we want to have as much presence as possible in this region.
What are your inspirations for this collection?
For our Spring Summer 2014 collection we started with the classic novel Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh, which is set in the 1930s. We develop the colours and themes from these ideas and fuse it with a very contemporary attitude so the modern man can enjoy wearing the clothes as much as seeing the inspiration behind the collection.
What trends are evident in your Spring/Summer 2014 collection?
We always stay true to our roots of exquisite tailoring and timeless cuts. So while we love to work with different prints, fabrics and themes, the essence of The Emperor 1688 will always be evident in the quality. We have used lots of light, fresh fabrics and colours to complement our styles in our collection.
