Accessorise yourself

You don't need a new wardrobe full of clothes, accessories can boost your look

Don’t have the time to shop for a new look? All you need is one accessory to transform your outfit. Louise Emma Clarke asks Mirjana Ruspic, online fashion stylist for Sivvi.com, which accessories can make all the difference.

For her

Make a statement
‘The right statement necklace can instantly jazz up the simplest of day looks or revamp your favourite little black dress into something special for a night out. My favourite way to wear this trend is to pair the necklace with something that is otherwise boring, like a plain dress or T-shirt and jeans for a touch of unexpected glamour. My top tip is to go easy on other accessories; the statement necklace should be the big statement here!’
Buy: Venna necklace, Dhs3,040, S*uce, various locations including The Dubai Mall (www.shopatsauce.com).

Belt it
‘Got a dress in your wardrobe that you’ve worn several times before? Give it a whole new look by belting it. Choose a skinny belt in a bright colour or interesting texture, making sure you secure the belt around the smallest part of your waist to highlight – or create the illusion of – an hourglass figure. This tip isn’t limited to dresses either; you can also belt coats, jackets, cardigans and jumpers to give them a whole new look over the festive season.’
Buy: Rose gold and pewter plaited belts, Dhs50 for two, Next.

Be brave with bags
‘Whether it’s embellished with jewels or a bright, eye-catching colour (or both), the trend for interesting, statement bags is to effortlessly work them into your outfit. This is a really easy way to refresh your winter wardrobe – just make sure the rest of your look complements the bag, rather than competes with it. An easy way to experiment with the trend is by pairing a simple white shirt turned up at the cuffs with ripped denims, super glam high heels, a jacket over the shoulders, and a beautiful pop of colour under your arm with the bag.’
Buy: Red lips clutch, Dhs1,545. Lulu Guinness at Sivvi.com.

Let your shoes do the talking

‘This trend might seem a little intimidating, but, rest assured, there is a statement shoe for every stylish man out there. A pair of simple but elegant loafers with a playful twist on fabrics can turn an all-black outfit into a showstopping look. For the adventurous, colour-blocked boots, printed trainers or brogues with patterned laces can instantly transform your outfit for parties!’
Buy: Printed trainers, Dhs2,900, Valentino at Harvey Nichols.

Add a bow tie
‘The art of wearing a bow tie is really all about the confidence to choose the accessory in the first place. Avoid novelties and stick to classic patterns, such as ginghams, stripes, spots and plaids. The easiest way to dress down a bow tie is to ditch the suit jacket and roll up the shirt sleeves.’
Buy: Bow tie, Dhs460, Hackett.

Wear a hat
‘If you want to give your wardrobe a boost, then invest in a hat. A well-chosen hat can add a strong statement to any outfit and is the perfect way to finish off a look. Newsboy caps are a very popular trend among hipsters and are great to add that touch of personality. Statement caps are also a good choice – in my opinion, the bolder the better.’
Buy: Newsboy cap, Dhs95, Zara.
