It’s no surprise that Melody Ehsani counts provocateurs Rihanna and Béyonce among the cult followers of her bold and colourful jewellery.
Not only are the acrylic, mixed metal, coloured stone and diamante earrings, cuffs and rings with playful birds, star and watermelon motifs all distinctive, but the woman behind the brand is complex, anarchic and unapologetic – just the ticket for women looking to follow suit.
The Los Angeles-born, Persian designer is a staunch believer in staying true to her beliefs. She originally went to law school – to peruse the respectable profession expected of her female family members after college. ‘But I couldn’t stay there,’ she says.
‘I decided to break with my culture and follow my heart into a field I was internally drawn to – design. The more I designed shoes, jewellery and other products, the more it felt like the right thing for me to be doing. So now I believe that design is part of what I was designed to do. Design is part of my divine blueprint.’
Ehsani, whose company ethos is ‘Stop Waiting To Be Who You Already Are’, says that honouring her ambitions helps ‘bring to the world new patterns of behaviour and equality for myself and for all women in the future.
‘In my culture, a woman’s value and status are determined by her marriage. This is a difficult and challenging concept for many women in today’s world. By following my calling and making my products, I am helping women resolve these kinds of paradoxes.
‘I want to become my true self and be a vibrant member of a family and a community. I want the women who wear my pieces to have the same opportunity for equality, wholeness, and self-expression.’
Pushing the envelope
The frustration of not being able to find anything in the market with enough of a voice drove Ehsani to begin making pieces out of her Los Angeles studio apartment. She was inspired by ‘paradox, controversy, justice and pushing the envelope’ and her great passion for music, art and fashion.
Ehsani’s goal wasn’t to become a new look on the scene, but instead to give fashion a ‘new voice’. The accessories and jewellery collection, she says, strives to push the boundaries of urban sensibility and create fun and quirky, quality products at affordable prices.
Of course, creating spiked python sneakers for Reebok, collaborating with MAC, and catching the eye of fans American singer-songwriters Erykah Badu and Alicia Keys, has helped turn Ehsani into something of a young ingénue in LA street style and her Fairfax Avenue boutique soon followed, right in the heart of LA’s street, music and skate scene.
