Forget the retro-kitsch kitchenware dominating the shelves of Dubai’s home furnishings chains. Really keen home cooks don’t need to set foot in the mall to find one of the city’s best stores. (Not that we wouldn’t swap all the tatty old crockery in the world for even half the contents of Crate & Barrel).
Stowed away in Al Quoz’s Courtyard complex, next to galleries, studios and a playhouse, Al Diyafa Hotel & Catering Supplies’ core business is kitting out the emirate’s hundreds of hotels, restaurants, bars and cafés. Set over two floors, the range of products stocked is vast and changes all the time. Whether you need 50 sets of chefs’ whites, 20 vessels for serving French fries, ten industrial toasters or a single serving platter, you’ll very likely find it here.
Prices are keen, too, and if you’re looking for something professional-grade or that’s been discontinued because it doesn’t fit with your nearest department store’s AW15 collection, Al Diyafa should be your first port of call. On our last visit, after years of hunting for a particular style in charity shops and thrift stores overseas, we found a good-quality, old-fashioned glass salt cellar – and it cost us just Dhs6.
For restaurant-level kit at home, this store is exactly what the sous chef ordered. The Courtyard, Al Quoz, www.aldiyafa.com (04 347 4727).
