Time Out Says

If you’ve lived in Dubai for a while, you’ll know just how popular camel racing is in the emirate.

You won’t actually see any people riding the camels – that job has been taken over by robots. Racing season lasts from September until the end of February and it can be pretty exciting to watch, since some camels can run at speeds of around 65 kilometres an hour.

Al Marmoum Camel Racetrack is one of the biggest camel tracks in the UAE. It’s out on Dubai-Al Ain Road, close to the home of another of the country’s biggest sporting events – the Sevens Stadium.

Once you’ve made it there, sit and watch the races from the grandstands by the starting point. The camels soon disappear, and it takes about 15 minutes for them to race back into view, but thankfully there are some huge screens dotted around, too, so you won’t miss out on any of the action. The camels’ owners, meanwhile, look like they’re having a race of their own, as they follow their dromedaries along the side of the track in their 4x4s.

Check out the races every Friday and Saturday throughout the season. There are two a day and it’s completely free to spectate. But you’ll have to get down there early if you want to catch both of them, as the first one is at 7am. If the thought of getting up that early at the weekend fills you dread, fear not. There’s also a race at 2pm.

It’s always a good idea to call ahead and check that the scheduled races are taking place before you head down there, just
in case.

Free. Fri-Sat 7am-2pm. Until Feb 28. Al Marmoum Camel Racetrack, Dubai-Al Ain Road (04 832 6526).
