Salt Cave Spa

Paul Clifford gets blasted with sodium chloride in a bid to open up his airways and improve sleep

Time Out Says

Six 45-minute sessions in a salt cave can apparently improve breathing and quality of sleep. That’s something we’re very interested in, because living opposite a messy building site has started to affect both our ability to nod off at night and the quality of air we find ourselves constantly breathing in.

The benefits of spending time in a salt cave also extend to helping alleviate the symptoms of asthma, acne and eczema, or so the information on hand at Wafi’s Salt Cave Spa says.

The spa is set on the first floor of the mall, and is as clean and clinical as the greeting from its manager is warm and friendly. The treatment itself is pretty simple, you lie in a room filled with salt (imported from Poland) and wait for it to work its healing magic.

We leave our shoes and socks at the entrance to the spa and step into the “cave”. We’re not given a robe to wear, or told to wear specific clothing, so we’re in our usual day wear – which seems odd. Inside, the salt crunches beneath our feet. Chill-out music plays, while low-lighting changes colour and salt is blown into the room. We’re advised to stand in front of the salt chute for the first five minutes. We can feel something happen straight away. Our sinuses open and we can feel (taste?) the salt entering our system. After five minutes, we lie on a lounger and relax (get covered in salt) until our time is up.

There’s no denying that the experience of the cave improves breathing. When we emerge, it seems easier, but it is too early in the day for it to have any effect on sleeping, and after such a short time, problem areas on our skin remain. However, the benefits are supposed to reveal themselves after six sessions, so we weren’t expecting miracles. Nor were we expecting to leave looking like a snowman.
Dhs250 for one adult session, Dhs1,250 for six adult sessions. Sat-Wed 10am-midnight, Tue-Fri 10am-midnight.
