The Beach Polo Cup Dubai is now in its ninth year, and it all kicks off this week at Dubai Marina. Four teams will be competing for the top prize over the two-day competition, which runs from Thursday December 13 to Friday December 14, at the specially-built polo arena at Skydive Dubai, at Dubai Marina. And the best news? You can see it for free. Interest piqued? It's time to find out more.

What's it all about?
The event was founded here in Dubai by Mamemo Productions. Since then it’s grown hugely in popularity and now has a global following, with similar tournaments played in 38 cities across the world. In September 2014, Beach Polo Cup Dubai received the official Patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Sports Council, and the 2018 tournament will be held under his patronage for the fourth consecutive year.

It’s free to enter
For the first time this year, entrance to the Shams Zone will be free, so head on down to check out a fun sport you might not have seen before, without spending a fortune.

… Or you can party in style
However, if you’re an established pologoer, or just want a super-swanky night out and to push the boat out, there’s also a VIP Majlis Zone. Tickets are available on 800tickets.com, and start at Dhs625, including food and drinks. It’s time to dress up.

It’s different to regular polo
Unlike in field polo, a reduced team of three players aside (rather than the usual four) take part in a scaled-down arena. The ball is also made of lighter-weight material. Four seven-minute chukkas make up the action, with ponies being changed regularly, and you’ll also get closer than ever as the arena is sunken down beneath the public stands.

Who’s playing?
The tournament will star four teams, featuring both local and international players. Last year’s winners Tariq and Rashid Albwardy from the Desert Palm Polo Club will compete in opposing teams, with Rashid in Team Tonino Lamborghini Residences Dubai, alongside fellow Emirati Saoud Khoory and Argentinean pro, Maxi Malacalza. Tariq will join with his longtime Beach Polo Cup Dubai teammate Sam Instone, and tournament debutant Argentinean Ramiro Cordero for Team Hills Advertising. Team Altaaqa Global will feature Faris Al Yabhouni, Emirati Patron of the Abu Dhabi Polo Team. Al Yabhouni is playing alongside fellow Emirati Rashed Al Sayegh and Argentinean four-goaler, Santiago Gomez Romero. Plus, Team Lindt welcomes the first-ever female player in the Beach Polo Cup Dubai, Austrian Dr. Sabine Schaffer who will play alongside returning and loyal supporter, Swiss-English national Jan Nigel Bladen and experienced Argentinean pro, Tomas Iriarte.

Plan your journey
There’s no public parking at the event, so head there via taxi. If you travel by Careem, use the code BeachPolo2018 and you’ll get 50 percent off your ride (up to Dhs30).

Go Christmas shopping while you’re there
Not found the perfect gift yet? For the first time there will be a Christmas market at the event, which will be selling arts and crafts, jewellery, toys, home décor and toys.
