UAE's huge Open Surf Competition returns for 2019

Have a knack for riding the waves or simply enjoy people doing flips and tricks on a surf board? Good news, as the GCC’s only surfing competition is making a return this month.

Surf’s up at Nikki Beach Resort & Spa Dubai, as the resort is hosting Havaiana’s Sunset Open Surf Competition, and it has a beach festival to go along with it.

Surf competitions depend on the waves and the weather, so the two-day event will take place in a waiting period between Friday February 15 and Sunday March 31, running across the best consecutive Friday and Saturday waves.

The seventh competition will see the best surfing talent from across the region compete across six divisions.

Organised by Surf House Dubai, the company has teamed up with luxury Swiss watch brand Breitling to give the winners of the male and longboard categories a brand-new Superocean Héritage II Chronograph 44 Outerknown watch.

The event is completely free for everyone to watch, and will feature beach yoga, strength and fitness training workshops, kids activities, along with food and drinks from Nikki Beach, a retail selection from Surf House Dubai, Rip Curl and live music.

Think you have what it takes? There are only 100 spots open for competitors, so make sure you sign up on Surf House Dubai’s Facebook page.

“It’s one of the most exciting times of the year for Dubai’s existing surfing community - we have a surprisingly strong surf history here and we’re proud of the talent in the region”, said managing director and founder of Surf House Dubai Scott Chambers.

“It’s also a great opportunity for newcomers and others interested in experiencing Dubai’s vibrant surf community, whether it’s to take part in the event or simply to enjoy the atmosphere and activities.”

That isn’t the only thing happening at Nikki Beach Dubai, as it’s throwing a huge “Viva Las Vegas” party that will host international dance star Salif Lasource.

As for other competitions, the Tough Mudder is returning to the UAE, and its looking to be bigger, better and even more muddy than ever before.

But for now – surf's up.
Free entry. Fri Feb 15-Sun Mar 31 (waiting period). Nikki Beach Resort & Spa Dubai, Pearl Jumeira, (04 376 6162).
