Free street cricket tournament starts tomorrow in Dubai

If you’re looking for some weekend plans that’ll bowl you over look no further – there’s a street cricket tournament coming to Dubai that’s free for all.

Plus, you can also get free shaves from Gillette while you watch.

As the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 begins in England and Wales, all eyes in the UAE will turn to the four-day Gillette Ramadan Street Cricket tournament, which starts tomorrow (Thursday May 30) too.

The event sees 32 teams of amateurs compete to be crowned the best in the region.

More than 350 players from Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan will play in four days across two weekends on an abandoned car park that has been converted for the occasion.

It’s next to Global Village and is free for all, with matches scheduled to take place from 9pm to 1am, Thursday May 30 to Friday May 31 and Thursday June 6 to Friday June 7.

Aside from the cricket, players and visitors can enjoy an array of entertainment, including a local food truck and a special Gillette shaving booth, offering all attendees pitch-side shaves while watching the matches unfold.

Commenting on the launch, Tarek Abdelaziz, Gillette Middle East commercial leader, said “Street cricket is a huge part of the UAE’s sporting DNA and its evident to see just by the amount of pop-up street cricket games you see every weekend.

“As a brand engrained in sport, we wanted to provide amateur cricketers the opportunity to showcase their skills to residents of the UAE, while providing the community with the chance to see these players up close.

“The event will be brilliant fun for players and spectators alike.”

The tournament structure is a knockout format, with the first round of games getting underway this Thursday.

Each match will be approximately one hour long, with each team batting just six overs each.

The winning team of each game progresses to the next round, with the losing team going home.

Howzat for an unusual weekend?
