Free ultramarathon training sessions announced

Three months of free training every Friday to help whip us into shape

Free ultramarathon training sessions announced

If you’re eyeing up the 300km ultramarathon, also known as the world’s longest desert race, and putting yourself through the ultimate endurance test, then you could be in with a chance of winning the cash prize of US$100,000 (more than Dhs360,000).

But, you’re not just going to be ready for the event (which takes place between December 9 and 13), without putting in some seriously hard yards, or kilometres, in training.

Well, to get into a position to even consider competing, you’ll need to do regular long-distance runs. The organisers behind the Al Marmoom Ultramarathon 2019 are encouraging runners who want to join the long-distance run in December to participate in weekly build-up runs and training programme.

“The weekly training sessions are an ideal opportunity for runners; both individuals and teams to learn sand running skills, build running stamina and develop the important mind set for the challenge,” said His Excellency Saeed Hareb, Secretary General of Dubai Sports Council.

The weekly sessions are free to join, and kick off at 5.30am every Friday between now and Friday November 29. The sessions, and you, will run until 9.30, so that’s four hours of dessert running (a mere trickle of sand in the dessert compared to the four-day challenge event in December).

But if you’re ready to give it a shot, email

If you’re more of an obstacle course runner than an ultramarathon runner, then check out the return of Tough Mudder.
Fri 5.30am-9.30am. Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve (meeting at Last Exit, Al Qudra),
