Swim, cycle and run your way through these exciting races

Three upcoming Dubai triathlons to check out

Swimming through the ocean for 2km, hopping on your bike for another 90km and finishing off with a 21.1km run to finish it all off – sounds nearly impossible, doesn’t it?

Well, not for the triathletes of Dubai. In fact, the UAE boasts a jam-packed schedule of triple-threat events throughout the year, and there are plenty to look forward (and train for) over the next few months.

Don’t let those distances scare you off, as Dubai offers a range of triathlons with various difficulties – for the newcomers working their way to becoming all-round athletes to the pros looking for a commendable challenge.

Up for putting your swimming, cycling and running skills up to the test? Check out three big races taking place in Dubai below. And, if you’re not there to take part, head on over anyway and show your support.

Ironman 70.3
Having a swim with the backdrop of the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah in the background, taking a ride through the city and running along the beach sounds all well and good. Well, until you add a distance to it. Dubai’s Ironman 70.3 makes a return this year, and athletes from around the world are getting ready to conquer the Herculean distance. Taking place on Friday March 7, triathletes will kick off the race with a 1.9km swim starting at Jumeirah Beach Hotel, and finishing at Jumeirah Public Beach. Then it’s on to a one-loop 90 km bike ride heading towards the desert dunes of Dubai, and a half-marathon run along Jumeirah Beach Road for the final stretch of the race. It’s a big ‘un, so be sure to go along and cheer on the athletes.
Free to attend. Fri Feb 7, 8am onwards. Jumeirah Beach Road, www.ironman.com.

GRIT+TONIC
This one is perfect for newcomers, but that doesn’t mean it won’t test your athletic powers. Taking place around Al Mamzar, athletes will start off with a swim along the beaches of La Mer, and then carry on along closed roads around Mamzar for a cycle. Finish off along a dedicated running track and hey-ho, you’ve completed the triathlon. Aimed at triathletes of all abilities, GRIT+TONIC’s race is meant to be all about fun. Those who complete the big race will get a branded race shirt and medal, along with fruits and plenty of (much-needed) water at the finish line. Good luck, racers.
Dhs330 (adults), Dhs250 (juniors below 19). Fri Mar 13, 7am onwards. Mamzar Beach Walk, Al Mamzar, www.allevents.in.

JLL Triathlon Series
Now in its seventh year, the JLL Triathlon series returns with a course set all around JA The Resort, with two triathlons taking place with various distances. Those after more of a sprint can sign up for the Super Sprint Distance Tri-athlon, which includes a 375m swim circuit, 10km bike route and 2.5km running path. Think you can go the distance? The Sprint Distance Triathlon features a challenging 750m swim, 20km bike ride and 5km run. We’re sure athletes will have worked up an appetite, so good thing all those taking part can tuck into a post-race breakfast. Well-deserved.
From Dhs230. Sat Mar 21, 7.15am onwards. JA The Resort, Mina Jebel Ali, www.hopasports.com.
