There’s a brand-new beach sports festival and it’s coming to Kite Beach this weekend.

Dubai Sports Council has revealed plans for a Beach Sports Week, where four different events will take place at Kite Beach in Dubai’s Jumeirah.

It will all kick off on Thursday (July 23) with the Elite Men’s Beach Volleyball Tournament.

The three-day event will feature 16 teams, with two players in each. Matches are scheduled for 5pm to 7pm on Thursday and on Friday and Saturday from 7am to 9.30am and 6pm to 7.30pm. Meanwhile there’s also a women’s tournament on July 24, 25 and 31 and August 1.

On Friday and Saturday there will be a beach tennis competition – an adaption of lawn tennis that follows the same scoring process. During beach tennis the ball may not hit the ground, so expect a fast-paced match. Play is via serves, volleys and smashes, so players dive to get the shot.

Also on Friday and Saturday will be a six-team FootVolley tournament, organised with AFC Sports Academy. The matches are open to both men and women and will be played from 7am until 9.30am.

Finally there’s an AirBadminton tournament on July 24 and 25, using special shuttlecock called ‘AirShuttle’, which can be used in winds up to 12km per hour.
