Fitness app ClassPass takes over GuavaPass in Dubai

Now you won't have to choose between the two

Fitness app ClassPass takes over GuavaPass in Dubai

ClassPass arrived in Dubai late last year and transformed the city’s sport and fitness scene.

Workout buddies of past went their separate ways as fitness buffs jumped ship in search of better gym classes (and no doubt a better deal) - though reunions could now be in store.

The fitness pass app, which launched in October last year, has now taken over GuavaPass, the app that previously reigned supreme in the UAE, with users receiving emails laying out their options last night (Sunday January 6).

And there’s no time to let the grass grow under your feet. GuavaPass membership will be valid until Monday January 14 at 11.59pm, after which point members can choose to convert their remaining membership into a prorated ClassPass gift card, or receive a refund on fees already paid in advance of that date.

But you won’t have long to decide. If you don’t let Guava know your decision by Sunday January 13 at 11.59pm, you will be automatically issued a ClassPass gift card by email.

With the transaction, ClassPass will acquire GuavaPass operations in 11 countries across Asia and the Middle East including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bangkok, Beijing, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Mumbai, Shanghai and Singapore.

After the acquisition is closed, GuavaPass will cease operations in markets where ClassPass is available. In remaining markets, the GuavaPass brand will continue to operate under the ClassPass umbrella until further notice.

GuavaPass founders Jeffrey Liu and Rob Pachter will join the ClassPass team, along with select GuavaPass talent, to further expand ClassPass’ international presence.

With the acquisition, ClassPass now operates in more 80 markets across 15 countries and plans to continue its expansion by launching in at least 50 new markets in 2019.

“We’re thrilled to acquire GuavaPass’ assets and select talent and continue building the biggest fitness membership for our customers, and the largest global network for our partners”, said ClassPass CEO Fritz Lanman.

“While acquiring competition is not part of our growth strategy, it’s clear that GuavaPass’ founders and team are committed to a common mission and we look forward to welcoming them to ClassPass as we continue global expansion.”
