Football in Abu Dhabi

There’s plenty of football-related fun to be had in the capital during December. Check this lot out…

Freestyle football

Sean is so good he doesn’t need a surname (not only that, it’s also pronounced ‘C-ann’). What that man can’t do with a football isn’t worth describing, and the Red Bull Street Style champion of 2008 will be showing off his skills alongside fellow street-styler Wass as part of the Footie Middle East event. Think you’re good at keepie-uppies? Trust us, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

Sean and Wass perform on December 12 at 5.30pm.

Beachy fun

Held on the beach pitch at Footie Middle East, you can try your hand at beach soccer between 11am and 3pm every day of the fair. There is also an initiation into the magical world of footie volley – yep, it’s basically volleyball with your feet and about as difficult as it sounds. Good luck.

December 10-12, 11am-3pm; footie volley at 5pm.

Tournaments

There’s more than one football tournament taking place this week – in fact, there are about a dozen happening at Footie Middle East, from street football to the event’s very own world cup.

All the finals are being held on December 12. We say check out the footie-volley exhibition and get some tips.

December 12, from 11.30am.

Footie Allstars

Exactly which players will be taking part in the Footie Allstars game was unconfirmed at the time of going to press, but we know of a fair few big names set to be appearing in the capital during the exhibition, including current Chelsea star Nicolas Anelka, as well as legends from the past such as Marcel Desailly and Emmanuel Petit. There’s even a rumour going around that enigmatic French football-maestro-turned-actor Eric Cantona could make an appearance. Zut alors!

December 12, from 6.30pm.

Activities area

Yes, the activities are many and various, from one-on-one pitches, target practice and football-tennis to table football and something baffling called acrobranch – in other words, a zipline. What that’s got to do with football we’re not sure, but if you’re feeling fit, you can try the agility tests and embarrass yourself in front of your mates.

December 10-12, Footie Middle East takes place at Adnec from December 10-12. For more information, see www.footiemiddleeast.com.
