Dubai Sports World 2014

Take a peak inside this year’s Dubai Sports World

Benita Adesuyan takes a peak inside this year’s Dubai Sports World, the UAE’s largest indoor sports venue.

There’s not much excuse for letting the ever increasing temperatures in the emirate put you off your favourite sport, or for that matter, discovering a new one. Located at Dubai World Trade Centre, Dubai Sports World (DSW) is the UAE’s largest indoor summer sports venue and from Wednesday June 11 to August 31, it will be opening its doors to make sure you don’t have to skip a single sporting activity this summer. This year is the event’s fourth outing and there’s plenty of sports to try in amongst the confines of the venue’s 20,000 square meters. Check out what DSW has in store for you.

You and six of your rugger crew can book one of the eight pitches here and have the field to yourselves for an hour or more. Teams can register online for a playing period and have matches. The space is also available for corporate games.
Dhs300 per hour. Daily 8am-6pm, Dhs500 per hour 6pm-midnight.

Always a popular choice at DWS, the facility hosts five- and seven-a-side football matches on its pro-standard pitches. This year, a brand new DSW Cup Football Tournament is taking place from Sunday June 15-July 7.

If you fancy yourself as the next Serena Williams or Novak Djokovic, or are gearing up for tennis season (Wimbledon starts Monday June 23) you can work on your backhand at the tennis court. There is only one court at the facility, so it’s best to book well in advance to secure your tennis time.
Dhs125 per hour. Daily 8am-midnight.

A great all-round body workout and an energetic game, and if you usually like to play on the beach, fear not, DWS has a volleyball court housed in the complex.
Dhs110 per hour. Daily 8am-midnight.

Always popular at DSW, there are three full-size basketball courts on offer. As well as being open for general play and fitness, the courts will also play host to the DSW Basketball Tournament from Sunday June 15-July 23.
Dhs110 per hour. Daily 8am-midnight.

Whether you bat, bowl or field one things for sure, you won’t have to skip cricket because of the heat. The facility offers players a large pitch with safety nets so you can hit the ball for six in confidence.
Dhs110 per hour. Daily, 8am-midnight.

Book one of the six badminton courts and enjoy a day enjoying this racket sport. Players with superb shuttlecock skills can enter the badminton tournament in August.
Dhs50 per hour. Daily. 8am-midnight.

Skateboarding and BMX
DWS is catering for a variety of sporting activities and has a skate board and BMX park. Bring your wheels and test your skills over the ramps and half pipes in the facility, it’s always popular with the city’s teens and those that like their sports with a little more adrenalin. The Rage skate park has a bike track with bumps and hills along with a quarter-pipe. There will also be a Skateboarding Day on Saturday June 21, with a full day of free skateboarding to boot.
