Join a Dubai football league

Take a look at the leagues starting now for men and women

1/2

The football season is underway, and no matter where in the world your team is, the games and goals are in full swing in leagues and championships globally. Here in the UAE, football has always been a popular way to keep fit and socialise, and many expats sign up to play in a team before they’ve even found a place to live. If you fancy making like Messi and having a kick-about in the city, here are some leagues to sign up to – there are games for girls, too.

Dubai Amateur Football League
This is the largest amateur football league in the Middle East, with a premiership, divisions two to four and a social veterans over 35s league. More than 1,000 players take part and there are teams for all levels. The league runs from September to April then offers players a summer league from May until August. Teams play across Dubai and are open to new players. Go online to find a squad near you.
Men only. www.dubaifootball.leaguerepublic.com.

Duplays Premier Football 7s
This new league plays four nights of seven-a-side football every week. Rebooting on Wednesday October 8, the league has teams for all skill levels and at the competitive end it gets pretty impressive – the top four teams from each league will be invited to play in an end-of-season Champions League event. If you’re looking for a mid-week game, join the Wednesday night league, which is more recreational. Sundays and Tuesdays are for the serious players.
Dhs500 per person or Dhs3,500 per team. Men only. Sun-Wed, 7pm-11pm. Dubai American Academy, Al Barsha, www.duplays.com (04 447 2394).

Duplays Supporter’s Club football tournament 2014
Football isn’t just about the players on the pitch. The supporters in the stands give the game atmosphere and excitement too. Sports league organiser Duplays is putting together its first-ever Supporter’s Football Club tournament for die-hard football fans, with teams battling it out over the course of two days.
Dhs2,000 per team. Men only. October 17-18. 9am-9pm. Dubai Sports City, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311), www.duplays.com (04 447 2394).

Dubai Sports City Societe 7-a-side League
There’s still time to join a team on this seven-a-side league at Dubai Sports City. Sponsored by Societe bar, the league is open to new teams and players of all abilities. There are 24 teams divided into two divisions. Everyone plays each other once and then there’s a finals week. At the moment, this league is just for complete teams, but there are plans to sign up individuals in the future. Email football@dxbsport.com to register your squad.
Dhs3,500 per team, including Puma shirts. Men only. Mon 7.30pm. Dubai Sports City, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311), www.dubaisportscity.ae (04 481 555).

Power Play Under 19s five-a-side
This is the only under-19s league in the city. It caters to young players with experience and talent to nurture, as well as to those who want to just keep fit and enjoy the camaraderie of the faster-paced five-a-side game. The league is played on Thursday evenings at Power Play’s floodlit pitches and each game lasts 40 minutes.
To register your team, email elliot@powerplay.ae. Dhs30 per player per week. Men only. Thu 7.30pm. Until December 5. Power Play centre, Al Meydan Road, www.powerplay.ae (050 876 9255).

Dubai Women’s Football Association
Women can join the city’s only female seven-a-side football league in Dubai. It currently has 12 teams and has just re-started its matches, but newbies are always welcome to train with existing teams, and once spots open up, they can join the squad. The league has players aged from 14 years through to over 50 – it’s extremely social and a great way to make international friends as well as get acquainted with the city, especially if you’re new to the Dubai. Coaches are extremely dedicated to developing players and building on their talents.
To join the Football Association email dubaiwf@hotmail.com. Dhs200 per person registration fee. Training Sun 8.45pm-10.15pm, matches Tue 7.30pm. Jebel Ali Centre of Excellence, Jebel Ali, www.dubaiwfa.com (no number).
