You’ll need to abandon any hint of fear for this high-octane, adrenaline-fuelled sport, and completely ignore that voice in the back of your head telling you it’s madness to jump out of a perfectly good aeroplane. You’ll also need to muster all your courage when you’re stood at the edge of the plane’s open door, 13,000 feet above the ground. For the ultimate in thrills, nothing beats skydiving.
Skydive Dubai offers jumps over Palm Jumeirah for a truly stomach-churning, yet exhilarating experience, with fantastic views all the way down. The company offers tandem jumps for beginners with no previous experience, complete with photos and video so you can prove any doubters that you did actually jump. With great planes and instructors, expect to freefall for over a full horrifying minute. Note that for safety reasons there are restrictions: you need to be at least 18 years old (over 60s will need to complete a medical statement) and ladies must weigh no more than 198lbs/90kg with a maximum BMI of 27.5, while for gents it’s a maximum of 220.5lbs/100kg and a BMI of 30.0.
If you’re keen to develop further and take up skydiving as a regular pursuit, Skydive Dubai has a second drop zone and campus in Mergam, around 35km outside Dubai. Here, you’ll find the Accelerated Free Fall (AFF) course, a training programme that combines ground school and training jumps. You’ll gain all the skills, knowledge and experience to jump solo and, eventually, unsupervised.
For experienced skydivers with over 500 jumps who are keen to advance further, SkyDive Dubai also offers a pro course that lets you become an instructor or even an examiner. In addition, coaching is available in freefly/wingsuit skydiving, formation skydiving and canopy piloting, plus team training is also welcome.
So, whether you’re a newbie, weekend warrior, belly flyer, experienced competitor, wing suit flocker, swooper or vertical formation skydiving ninja, Skydive Dubai has you covered.

Time Out says...
‘Definitely a must-do, the anticipation as you go through the training, the butterflies in the pit of your stomach when the tiny plane takes off and the absolute terror when you throw your legs over the side of the aircraft are totally worth the exhilaration of hurtling through the sky – just don’t get so awestruck that you forget to breathe!’
Experience the thrill of skydiving, but indoors. In about 45 minutes, you will sign a waiver, attend a class, learn the appropriate hand signals, get dressed in all your flying attire and then fly twice with an instructor right by your side. Dhs220 per person for first time flyers.
Open Sun-Wed 10am-11pm; Thu-Sat 10am-midnight. Mirdif City Centre, www.iflyme.com (04 231 6292).
