Meet the ICC Academy coach

Will Kitchen, 33 talks about life in sport

Interview, Interviews, Testzone

How did you become a cricket coach?
As playing professionally became less of a reality, coaching was the next best thing. It meant I could still be part of professional cricket and it’s allowed me to work with some outstanding players as well as travel the world.

What does a cricket coach do?
It depends on who they coach. Being head coach of the Indian team is very different to working with a group of under-sevens, but ultimately, good coaches inspire people to love the game and be the best they can be.

Why is cricket so complicated?
It’s not! The batsmen must score as many runs as possible. It’s the bowler’s job to prevent this by bowling them out. The fielders and wicket keeper are there to help the bowler. Simple!

What’s the best bit about your job?
The fact that every day I get to do something I love.

Do you ever get bored of cricket?
Only if I have to watch myself play it.
